 UPDATES/CORRECTIONS
 -------------------
Face To Face is now 10/15 at Metro, not 10/8. Tickets will be honored, or
can be refunded at point of purchase.

Killdozer's final show is now 11/15, not 11/16, at Empty Bottle.

 GUESS THE REFERENCE
 -------------------
Last week: "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc. 10 correct entries, 3 wrong or
incomplete, including the best entry of the week from Christina Perozzi:

The Pretenders Haiku (Or The Indecent Proposal Haiku Remake)

     "I'm Not in Love" but
     I'd about do anything
     For a fat cool mill

She doesn't mention 10cc, so I wonder if she thought that it was a
Pretenders song. No matter, she gets a Shows List Dollar (only one).
Random winner is Vytenis Markevicius. (No cries of unfair influence from
the people at work, please. He's not my boss any more.) Winners, send me
 your US Mail address.

Send your entries for this week to shows@tezcat.com. Be sure to include
your name in the entry so I can tell you if you win, as well as band name
 and song title.

 10CC ADDENDUM
 -------------
I mentioned 10cc as being a "seminal" band. I'd always heard that the band
got their name because 10cc (cubic centimeters) is supposedly the volume of
the average male ejaculation. Over half of last week's GTR entries
 mentioned that same story, too.

I checked my copy of the excellent book "Rock Names" by Adam Dolgins,
which is a collection of stories behind hundreds of different band names.
It refutes the story. The following is from an interview with "music
industry impresario Jonathan King, who also named Genesis":

Interviewer: Tell me about 10cc and how that came about.

King: I started my own band label in the early 70s called U.K. Records and
I picked up this master called "Donna" by this group that was put together
by a guy that I knew from Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders a long while
back [guitarist Eric Stewart]. I had to give them a name there and then
because I had signed the record, and I went to sleep that night, and I had
this dream that a band of mine on my label made number one on the album and
singles charts simultaneously in America, and the band was called 10cc. So
I gave them that name the next morning. Everybody then decided that this
was apparently meant to be the amount of an average male ejaculation which
was absolutely far from the truth; it had not been a wet dream, I can
 promise.

Interviewer: Is 10cc actually the true measurement of...?

King: You, I'm sure, would know more than I, since I've never had an orgasm.

Interviewer: I had heard that you, knowing that the average male
ejaculation measured 9cc, had decided to call them 10cc you thought they
were above average. Is that apocryphal?

King: Totally apocryphal. There's a lot of apocryphal stories about names,
and unfortunately, most of them are much more amusing than the ugly
reality, which in this case is that the name came to me in a dream, a bit
 like Joseph.

The Shows List is updated late every Thursday night. You can get it over
 the Internet in two ways:

     World-Wide Web: http://www.tezcat.com/~andy/shows/
Mail subscription: <shows@tezcat.com> Ask to be added, and mention
where you found out about the list.

 Please mail to shows@tezcat.com:
     - New shows you'd like to see added
     - Any corrections to anything in the list
     - Subscription requests, or drop requests
     - Information about other shows list across the country
     - Anything other comments, etc

There are many other shows lists available on the via email. As far as I
know, unless the address is "listproc" or "listserv", the list is run by a
human, not an automated list-management program.
